Before the First Class Work

Your best piece of creative work before coming to this course

This is a drawing that was part of a body of work I created for my final IB Visual Arts Submission. This work means a lot to me because I went out of my comfort zone when creating it – experimenting with a different medium, techniques, and colours. This work was inspired by a photo I took at my local beach, and the entire body of work was about my connection to the beach, having grow up near it my whole life. More broadly my artworks explored the connection between place and identity, depicting scenes and concepts important to me as a person. For this artwork, I primed some watercolour paper with some deep red gesso to create a textured surface to work on. I then used oil pastels of various colours to draw the oysters, at times leaving the deep red of the canvas exposed. This artwork was filled with new experiences, challenges, and experimentation.

A great piece of architecture
This is the Louis Vuitton Foundation building designed by Frank Gehry. I found this building last year whilst researching for my Extended Essay, a key component of the IB, and was instantly drawn to its interesting form. I really like the use of glass in this building, and how the different segments look like sails billowing around a central structure. I also enjoy the way that you can see the structure of the building, which looks quite skeletal in nature, giving the building an organic yet structured form. I have never visited this building but I would like to one day.

An original photograph of something beautiful

This is a photo that I took whilst in Cradle Mountain, Tasmania, during December. The views of the mountain itself and the lake were fantastic, however what I found most beautiful about the Cradle Mountain area was the colours of the landscape. Whilst it is a hard thing to capture in a photo, this is one of my photos that I think best conveys what I loved about the landscape and the flora of Cradle Mountain. Vibrant pops of colour met with the more common muted and weathered hues of the environment in perfect harmony. It was a beautiful soft, spectacular, and oftentimes out-of-this-world landscape to experience.
